Telford based oil mist filters manufacturer Filtermist is delighted to report that its latest recruit is following in his father’s footsteps by joining the Telford based company’s manufacturing department.

17-year-old Brandon Dixon, a former RSA Academy pupil from Wednesbury, has started a two-year apprenticeship programme to become a qualified Engineer.

Brandon’s father Mark Dixon is a highly skilled metal-spinner and has worked at Filtermist for more than 12 years. Mark says, “I’m really proud that Brandon shares my interest in metalworking and has joined the team at Filtermist. It’s a bit strange seeing him at work every day, but in a good way!”

Brandon will spend time in all of the manufacturing departments to ensure he has experience in every aspect of producing Filtermist oil mist filters – from forming the sheet steel flats into rounds, to spinning, welding, soldering and riveting.

Manufacturing Manager Brian Lowe has worked with Mark for more than 18 years and plays a key role in ensuring Filtermist’s workforce has the skills the business needs to continue growing. Brian comments, “Filtermist recognises the importance of investing in training for the next generation of engineers - traditional manufacturing skills are still absolutely vital to our business.

“We are all really pleased that Brandon has decided to follow in Mark’s footsteps. Manufacturing offers a wide variety of career paths and by spending time in each of our departments, Brandon will be able to decide which aspect he prefers so he can specialise further down the line.”

The apprenticeship programme is being delivered in conjunction with Mercia Management and Dudley College. Brandon spends one day a week at the college’s dedicated engineering facility, Dudley Advance, where he is undertaking a number of subject units including engineering principles, engineering techniques, health and safety, and milling and turning.

Filtermist oil mist filters are used by leading manufacturers in more than 60 countries worldwide, including many high-profile names in the aerospace and automotive sectors who trust Filtermist to protect their people by ensuring cleaner, safer, more productive workshops.

Filtermist is a Phase 2 supporter of Made Here Now, an initiative designed to encourage young people to consider careers in manufacturing.
